In the tradition of Thomas R. Dargan, dedicated and lifelong broadcaster, this scholarship is intended to encourage and assist minority students to complete their education in broadcasting or communications.

 

Eligibility

Applicant must be a minority citizen of the United States and provide proof of U.S. citizenship.

Minority is defined as Asian; Black/African American; Hispanic or Latino; American Indian or Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander; or that of two or more races.

Applicant must be at least a sophomore enrolled in broadcast, communications, or multi-media curriculum at a four-year college or university or an accredited community college in Oregon or Washington OR as a permanent resident of Oregon or Washington attending an out-of-state institution.

Community college students must be enrolled in a broadcast curriculum which is transferable to a four-year accredited university.

Applicant must have a minimum 3.00 GPA.

Requirements

Statement of need

Must include an estimate of the cost of one year at your institution (please include room, board, tuition, and books.)  Also list other resources of financial assistance, such as grants, scholarships, funding from parents, etc.

Academic Achievement

Submit an official transcript and three letters of
recommendation; two from academic sources, one personal.

Applicant essay

Include personal and professional goals and what you perceive will be your contribution as a minority in the field of broadcasting.

We will begin accepting applications in January.
Application deadline is April 30.

Selection

Finalists must be available in the month of May for a personal interview conducted by members of the scholarship committee. Interviews will be held at KATU studios in Portland, Oregon.

Notification

The selected applicant will be notified by July 1.  An alternate will be designated in the event the selected applicant is unable to fulfill the terms of the scholarship.

Terms

Scholarship award: $6,000.

Scholarship recipients may reapply for a renewal at the end of the first year of receiving the scholarship, but must have maintained at least a 3.00 GPA.

Winners are eligible for a paid internship in selected departments at Fisher Broadcasting/KATU.

Scholarship recipients are also required to correspond with the committee and include a copy of grades and other pertinent material at the end of each quarter or semester.

Disbursement

The funds will be deposited in the financial aid office of the institution attended by the student.
