On Saturday, April 2nd & Sunday the 3rd, St Josef’s Winery in Canby, OR will be celebrating its 28th Annual St Josef’s Festival. St Josef’s Day celebrates the founding of the winery and the blessing of the vines as spring begins in the vineyard. Playing on the heritage of the founder’s, swinging live music from the Portland Gypsy Jazz Project and home-made Hungarian Goulash along with other European style foods will be available. New releases of special reserve wines will also be sampled for the first time- including the barrel select Syrah and 2010 Pinot Rose.
With the vineyards planted in 1978 St Josef’s is one of the original wine pioneers in Oregon, and one of the first 25 wineries in Oregon. (There are now over 400). The St Josef’s Day Festival began as proprietors, Josef & Lilli who emigrated from Europe, wanted to pass on a little bit of the winegrowing spirit to the people of the Pacific Northwest. Since running a vineyard and winery is a lot of hours and hard work, they believe it is important to start the busy season off with a lighthearted approach. The heritage of fun with Gypsy Jazz Music and hosting friends & neighbors with a small party of good wines, homemade European foods and hospitality remains a hallmark of the winery.
In addition to tastings and winery tours held throughout each day, this year’s music is an all-star lineup of players from the Northwest. The ‘Portland Gypsy Jazz Project’ bandleader & guitarist Larry Munson and bassist Craig Snazelle will be joined on Saturday by renowned guitarist Jason Okamoto and violinist Eddie Parente. On Sunday the group includes guitarist Bryan Darby and violinist James Mason plus Craig Snazelle & Larry Munson. Both violinists are internationally recognized and are among the best in the country. And the guitarists are among the best in the northwest. Each player is well known in the NW music scene for this swinging style of music. The Portland Gypsy Jazz Project will be performing from 1 to 5pm on Saturday and Sunday. Admission is $5 and includes a souvenir glass.
St Josef’s Winery has been producing premium varietal wines since 1983 and has won many local and national awards. St Josef’s was recently featured on the TV Show “The Green Economy” for it’s sustainable vineyard & winery practices and named one of the “TOP 10 Secret Sweet Spots in Oregon” by the Mt Hood Territory tourism council. It remains proudly family owned and operated with 90 % of the production being Estate Grown - among the wines made are Pinot Noir, Merlot, Syrah, Lesprit (Gewürztraminer), Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay and Riesling.
