Makeup to Look Younger

Makeup Artist and Stylist, Kendra Stanton, says you don't need a facelift if you know how to countour with makeup.  She showed us how knowing the right techniques can help us look years younger.

This is what Kendra has to say:

As a Makeup Artist, contouring is one of my all-time favorite tricks. This simple concept will not only make you look younger, but feel more confident to face what the day throws your way.

One thing you must always keep is mind when applying makeup is that lightness brings things to the forefront and darkness makes things recede into the background. Think back to your middle or high school art class when you first learned how to highlight and shade a sketch. The “trick” is to use this concept while applying your makeup: highlighting areas that gather darkness and shadowing areas to create a contour.

Take a close look at your face and notice where your face has shadows. Typically this is your nasal labial folds (the fold from the corner of your nose to the outside of your lips), under your eyes, around and under your mouth and anywhere else where fine lines and wrinkles appear. These are the areas that need to be highlighted to “push” the shadow out and give the face a softer look.

The items you will need to pull of this trick off are:

  • foundation (not too thick)
  • a creamy concealer that is one shade lighter than your foundation
  • bronzer, blush
  • darker shadow for contouring
  • lighter shadow for highlighting
  • liner pencil
  • mascara
  • lipstick -- if you would like.

Here are the basic application techniques.  Feel free to add your own makeup style and colors to this concept:

  1. Apply a light , all-over coverage of foundation. Apply lightly so the foundation blends in naturally and doesn't overpower your face.
  2. Apply your concealer with a concealer brush to your under eye area, nasal labial folds, around the mouth, and upper cheekbones. Make sure to blend, blend, blend!
  3. Use your bronzer in the hollow of the cheek and temple to contour and help lift the cheekbone.
  4. Next apply blush for color.
  5. Use shadows to highlight and contour the eyelid to give the eye a lift. Do this by using a lighter eye shadow (think white/ or cream colored) under the brow bone and eyelid. Then place a darker shadow into the eyelid crease and some eyeliner on the outside edge brushing upwards to lift the eye.
  6. Apply mascara .
  7. Finally, add lip stick or gloss
