Ellen Heltzel's Latest Book Picks
Ellen Heltzel, Book Critic and author of "Between the Covers," joined us today with her picks for the best reads with a presidential theme. Here they are:
"Obama's Wars," by Bob Woodward... All the latest on the inner workings of the administration of our professorial president. Makes you wonder why in heck do these people let Woodward in the door to see how the sausage is made?!!
"First Family: Abigail and John Adams," by Joseph Ellis... Ellis also a respected biographer, although he got into some hot water for fabricating his Vietnam military career some years back. David McCullough, of course, already gave us the bestseller about John Adams, but Ellis is betting he can ride the wave. (Book doesn't come out until later Oct. but I'm hoping to get a copy...)
"Spoken from the Heart," by Laura Bush... Her memoir has been out for some months but is such a wonderful example of First Lady memoirs and confirms her continued popularity across a wide range of political persuasions.
"Condoleezza Rice: A Memoir of My Extraordinary, Ordinary Family and Me"... This is an interesting twist. The former secretary of state has written not only a memoir for adults but also a matching one for the Young Adult market, released simultaneously. What's up with that marketing decision? (I intend to answer that question.)
