Fun New Uses for Old Things

Tammy Hernandez joined local Interior Designer Lora Coburn at The Rebuilding Center.  Their mission?  To help us look at things a little differently!  As a designer, Lora can look at old things and see useful fun new pieces for our homes.  She sees uses for things like old light fixtures, an old hot tub and a display wall from an airport.  And, she showed us how she turned two broken-down kitchen cabinets and crusty old door into a cool new desk.

Here are Lora's tips for making the desk:

1. Be sure to scrape and sand off as much of the chipped paint as possible and get a nice even sanding over entire wood piece, so primer can adhere.
2. Repair, trim, etc. anything you need to before covering with primer.
3. Cover completely with primer. This gives is a nice, clean base for you paint.
4. Paint and let dry well. You can add lacquer or matte sheen on after paint is completely dry if you like.
5. Do all of the detail and trim work. This is only as limited as your imagination.
6. Assemble
