"The Wanteds" Documentary
"The Wanteds" is an independent documentary that travels through the shadowy corners of rock and roll and into the broken heart of a man forced to choose between his dreams and his conscience. It follows two years in the life Tommy Harrington as he embarks on his first tour of the country as a one-man band. Originally conceived as an entertaining document of a colorful character on an unorthodox tour of the U.S., "The Wanteds" quickly became something more.
Director Stephanie Smith joined us to talk about making the documentary. She hit the road with Tommy, embedded with him for his six-week tour of the U.S.. “While the shows lived up to the wacky hype imagined—with Tommy playing in cowboy bars, storage lockers, even a party for Mormon missionaries-- a different story began to unfold that was becoming more Shakespeare than Spinal Tap,” said Smith. “It started to become a story about family, identity, and what happens when you really go for your dream.” This led to a two year process of filming the story as it unfolded. The result is a heartbreaking, at times funny, and, in the end, redeeming portrait of a broken boy forced to become a man.
