We talked with pediatrician Dr. George Bengtson about the in's and out's of ear infections.

The proper way to tell the differences with ear infections is as follows:

AOM/True ear infection:

  • Bulging eardrum
  • Inflammation of eardrum
  • Puss behind the eardrum

OME/Otitis media with effusion:

  • Fluid (sometimes bubbly) behind the ear
  • Fluid is clear or nearly clear

Eustachian tube dysfunction ("pressure on the ear"):

  • Retracted eardrum
