Mayor of Portland Sam Adams

After defeating as many as 13 people running for amyor, Sam Adams, the elected Mayor of Portland, visited AM Northwest to tell us about the most important items on his agenda.

Elected Mayor Sam Adams will start his term as mayor January 1, 2009.

As mayor he will not enjoy many perks, but he will be the voice for Portland.

Three issues Mayor Sam Adams feels passionately about are, 1)  43% of our eighth graders do not graduate from high school, they drop out, 2) 21% of Portlanders get by on poverty wages, 3) there will be a million people being born and moving to the region the next couple of decades, and we're not ready.

He wants to focus on building stronger partnerships with the business community to expand programs, especially culturally specific programs like the native american youth academy, the Black Parenting Initiative.
