How to Have a More Satisfying Relationship

Susan Zabriskie teaches us how to build better relationships with men through empathy.

Life is all about relationships. It seems that often how satisfied we are with our life is connected to how satisfied we are with our relationships. Those relationships that are most satisfying to us bring us the greatest joy in life. How do we deepen our relationships to make them more authentic, to resonate and connect with people on the deepest level?

Examples of opportunities for building more satisfying relationships:

  • Helping your child feel understood.
  • Getting closer to your teenager.
  • Developing greater emotional intimacy with your spouse.
  • Communicating more authentically with your boss and co-workers.
  • Maybe you are the boss and need to develop a more positive climate at the workplace.

Differences between men and women:

  • Men, in general, have a harder time with expressing empathy than women
  • Classic: women feel better talking through their emotions; men want to "fix" the problem
  • Brain-based differences

In order to practice empathy, we need to do 3 things:

  1. Put our own judgments and opinions on the shelf (we can share our thoughts/feelings after offering empathy)
  2. Listen for what the person is feeling and reflect this back to him/her
  3. Try to identify what is underlying and generating this emotion and reflect your understanding of this
