What to Read to Your Children When

Pam Allyn, a children's literacy expert/advocate, and author of What To Read When: The Books and Stories to Read With Your Child--and All the Best Times To Read Them-- told us that children's reading skills and love of books thrive when ritual is in place.

Pam believes that having a nightly ritual of reading to your child in the kitchen while you cook dinner together is wonderful opportunity to bond amongst two great pleasures in life: food and books.

Says Pam, "He helps you stir and turn the pages and you read, and season, read and season." When Pam would practice this ritual with her 2 daughters when they were little, she recalls, "I wouldn't say my pot roast always had the right flavorings as a result, but the experience sure was sweet!"

In her book, What to Read When, Pam has a special section devoted to Savoring Food
