Fun Kid Project: Sidewalk Chalk

Fine Artist, Lea Keohane, joined us today with a fun project you and your kids can do together -- make your own sidewalk chalk!

You will need:

  • Toilet paper rolls, or ice cube trays to use as a mold for the chalk
  • Scrap paper
  • White glue or a glue stick
  • 1 cup Plaster of Paris
  • 1 cup water
  • powdered tempera paint
  • bowl and spoon for mixing

  1. If you are using toilet paper rolls for the mold, then you will have to cover one end of each roll.  Cut out a circle which is slightly larger than the end of the roll.  Cover the outside of one end of the toilet paper roll with glue.  Fold the scrap paper circle up around the edges of the tube and hold in place for about 30 seconds while the glue dries.  Set aside.
  2. In your bowl, mix together the Plaster of Paris and the water
  3. Stir in powdered tempera paint (keep adding until you get the shade you would like
  4. Option:  **try adding more than one color to get multi-colored chalk!
  5. Let the mixture stand for a few minutes
  6. Pour the mixture into your mold
  7. Let stand for approximately 24 hours.
  8. Peel the cardboard away and your chalk is ready to go!
