Best-Selling Author Eve Ensler
Best-Selling Author and Tony-Award Winning Playwright of The Vagina Monologues, Eve Ensler, joined us today with her first personal memoir In the Body of the World.
Even though Eve has devoted her life to the female body—how to talk about it, how to protect and value it—she has spent much of her life disassociated from her own body. This disconnection was brought on by her father’s sexual abuse and her mother’s remoteness. While working in the Congo, Eve is shocked out of her distance, and shattered by her encounter with the horrific violence inflicted on the women there. Soon after, she is diagnosed with uterine cancer, and through months of harrowing treatment she is forced to become first and foremost a body – pricked, punctured, cut, scanned. It is then that all the distance is erased. As she connects her own illness to the devastation of the Earth, her life force to the resilience of humanity, she is finally, fully – and gratefully – joined to the body of the world.
Eve’s profile is growing exponentially. Her off-Broadway play “Emotional Creature” premiered last November to much critical acclaim. On February 14, her activist movement, V-Day, celebrated its 15th Anniversary with a global initiative called “One Billion Rising.” The campaign calls for an end to the physical and sexual violence against women and girls, and counts amongst its supporters Rosario Dawson, Thandie Newton, Charlize Theron, Kerry Washington, Yoko Ono, Jessica Alba, Anne Hathaway, Donna Karan, Jennifer Lawrence, Dylan McDermott, Robert Redford, and Lily Tomlin, just to name a few.
Join Eve for her book signing event at 7:30 tonight at Powell’s City of Books, 1005 W Burnside, in Portland.
