Energy-Boosting Foods

If you're feeling sluggish don't reach for an energy drink or a candy bar.  Registered & licensed dietitian Megan Roosevelt joined us to share foods that can help boost your energy level naturally!

  1. Coconut Water:   We often think about food when think about health, however water is a vital for all life. Our body is predominately made of water believe it or not. Dehydration is a major cause for brain fog, feeling on edge, and lacking overall energy.  Coconut water is naturally full of electrolytes, which makes it one of the best ways to naturally rehydrate the body and restore energy levels through its detoxifying properties. Find it in cartons in your local health food stores or look for fresh young coconut water, if possible.  Also look for raw, shredded coconut: it's rich in medium chain fatty acids which provide long lasting and immediate energy. Cook with coconut oil / butter or buy unsweetened shredded coconut to top on your morning cereal.
  2. Whole Grain and Plant Based Carbohydrates: Many diets and dieters give up carbohydrates when they are trying to lose weight. However carbs are our friends! They are our bodies main sources of energy. In fact 50% of our diet should come from carbohydrates. To keep it healthy; choose whole grain carbohydrates such as; oatmeal, quinoa, brown rice and whole grain bread or starchy vegetables such as sweet potatoes. A medium sweet potato has only 100 calories and almost your entire days worth of recommended vitamin C!
  3. Beans / Legumes: Beans are both a protein and a starch so they provide energy (from carbohydrate) and lasting satiety (from protein).  Beans are a good source of iron as well. A common symptom of iron deficiency is fatigue.  Add beans to salads, soups, or try a bean dip such as hummus!
