Get the Most from your Gym Workouts

Are you getting the most from your workouts at the gym?  Our own Tammy Hernandez met up with fitness expert Beth Oliver to show how to avoid the most common mistakes people make when working out alone.

Don't lean on your cardio equipment.  It takes intensity away from your workout and can even injure your shoulders!  Instead, hold yourself upright, hold the handles lightly, or -- better yet -- hold yourself up without using the handles at all!

Don't read while you workout!  You'll get more out of your workout if you focus on what you're doing.

When lifting weights, work through full range of motion and don't swing the weights.  Many people will move the weights all the way up and only part of the way down....or they will swing the weights, using momentum instead of muscle power.  Both mistakes take away from the effectiveness of the workout.

Don't rest between sets.  Instead, do active stretches or core work.  Working this way will make your workout much more efficient.

When programming a piece of cardio equipment, use one of the pre-programmed cross-training workouts.  This will act like your own personal trainer and give you a much more effective workout in the time you spend.
