Healthy Summer Thirst Quenchers

Summer means longer days, warmer afternoons and cooler beverages! Healthy Grocery Girl Megan Roosevelt, RD, LD, joined us to share some fun ways to quench your thirst naturally.

Megan says, "Warmer weather means we need pay attention to our water intake, and hydrate more often to avoid dehydration. Symptoms of dehydration can include dizziness, mental fog, fatigue, feeling weak, extreme thirst as well as in severe conditions symptoms can include rapid heartbeat, rapid breathing, fever, delirium and unconsciousness."

Water, the best natural source for optimal hydration, can get boring. To beef up your water intake, Megan says to try these natural summer thirst quenching recipes!

Water Fresca

  1. Add 32 ounces of water and ice to a tall pitcher or mason jar. Infuse water with fresh fruit and herbs such as, organic sliced oranges, lemons, limes, cucumbers, fresh mint, and watermelon!
  2. Great water fresca combos include: cucumber + mint, lemon + lime, watermelon + strawberry
  3. Beverage tastes the best when water has had time to blend with fresh fruit, so prepare this recipe and store in the refrigerator for a minimum of 1 hour prior to serving

Sparkling Coconut Lemonade

  1. Lemonade is a summer classic! Add juice from ½ fresh squeezed lemon to 4 ounces of
  2. chilled coconut water and 4 ounces chilled sparkling water.
  3. Stir in 1 teaspoon of natural sweetener-- coconut sugar or local pure honey or even stevia-- for a touch of sweetness!
  4. Recipe serves one

2. Sparkling Japanese Drinking Vinegar

  1. Drinking vinegar has many health benefits including promoting cleansing and detoxification within the body and supporting healthy digestion.
  2. Add to 1 tablespoon of naturally sweetened Japanese drinking vinegar to 8 ounces of sparkling water, add ice, and enjoy!
  3. Recipe serves 1

Hydration tip: Never leave home without water! Make sure to carry a water bottle with you everywhere you go. This means, do not leave home, run errands, go to the pool or beach, without plenty of fresh cool water with you.
