"I Have a Dream Concert"
Blues musician Lloyd Jones joined us today for the "I Have Dream Conert". Over 20 Portland Luminaries From the Jazz, Blues, R&B and Folk Music Community Join Forces for an NAACP Fundraiser - January 18 - Alberta Rose Theatre A BENEFIT For NAACP'S ACT-SO Youth Advancement Program
Performers include such longtime Portland jazz and R&B talents as Gordon Lee, Reggie Houston, Ural Thomas, Shirley Nanette, LaRhonda Steele, Lloyd Jones, Janice Scroggins and Carlton Jackson and Gary Harris, among others. Some younger jazz/blues artists like Joe McMurrian and pianist Steve Kerin will perform. And owing to the deep folk component of the original Civil Rights movement, some of the top socially-minded musicians in Portland such as Kory Quinn, Hunter Paye and hip hop artist Mic Crenshaw will appear. Also in attendance, playing washtub bass with the Tin-Pan Alley Cats, is Christopher Yarrow, whose father Peter Yarrow, sang "Blowin' in the Wind" at Dr. King's original 'I Have a Dream' speech. Profits from the show will benefit the NAACP's high school student program ACT-SO (Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics), a yearlong achievement program designed to recruit, stimulate, and encourage academic and cultural achievement among African-American high school students.
