Making Feather Leis

May Day is a huge holiday in Hawaiʻi. Also called "Lei Day," itʻs a colorful panorama of flowers, costumes, hula dancing and pageantry, that's celebrated in all schools, from elementary to high school; featuring a May Day Queen and Court of princesses representing each of the Hawaiian Islands. Itʻs such a big deal, that parents typically take off work to attend their childrenʻs May Day pageants. Mary Alice Ka'iulani Milham from the non-profit Ke Kukui Foundation, a Hawaiian arts and culture preservation group based in Vancouver, showed Helen how to make a beautiful feather lei.

The Lei Day celebration is happening this Saturday from 11:00 am - 6:00 pm at Thomas Jefferson Middle School in Vancouver. Click here for more information.
