Dr. Andrew Ahmann, Director of the Harold Schnitzer Diabetes Health Center joined us today to tell us about how diabetes is affecting the health of the nation and about the events happening during the Pacific NW Diabetes Summit . 

Diabetes now affects > 11% of adult individuals in the US
By the year 2050 it is expected that diabetes will affect 1/3 of our population
Nearly 80 million individuals in the US have “prediabetes” meaning they have a high risk of developing diabetes.
Diabetes is very costly, results in premature death, and reduces quality of life
Harold Schnitzer Diabetes Health Center will also be doing a diabetes screening effort at the Center for Health & Healing  November 14, 2012 from 7:30-11:00 am
 

The Pacific Northwest Diabetes Week represents a local effort to focus on diabetes of all types and in all ages in Oregon and Southwest Washington.
The kickoff starts with Circle on the Court at the Rose Garden arena on Saturday November 10th where everyone interested in diabetes is welcome to come to learn about various resources in our area focused on diabetes care, education and prevention. Basketball and soccer clinics for kids
screening for diabetes, many hospitals and clinics and diabetes related companies having exhibits.
 

 It will end with The 5th Annual Pacific Northwest Diabetes Summit presented by the Harold Schnitzer Diabetes Health Center at OHSU on Saturday November 17th
Aimed at affected by diabetes directly or through family members
Morning session is for those interested in type 1 diabetes
Afternoon is for those interested in type 2 diabetes.

There will be a lunch combined with a bridging session applicable to all types of diabetes.
