The Truth About GMO Foods
There is a lot of concern and discussion about GMO's lately. If you are wondering what GMO stands for, what's the reason for all the buzz, and how does it affect you and your health. Healthy Grocery Girl Megan Roosevelt, RD, LD, joined us with some important information.
Here is the definition of GMOs from the NON GMO Project:
- GMOs, or “genetically modified organisms,” are plants or animals that have been genetically engineered with DNA from bacteria, viruses or other plants and animals. These experimental combinations of genes from different species cannot occur in nature or in traditional crossbreeding. Virtually all commercial GMOs are engineered to withstand direct application of herbicide and/or to produce an insecticide. Despite biotech industry promises, none of the GMO traits currently on the market offer increased yield, drought tolerance, enhanced nutrition, or any other consumer benefit. Meanwhile, a growing body of evidence connects GMOs with health problems, environmental damage and violation of farmers’ and consumers’ rights. To summarize, GMOs are manipulated food and are therefore no longer really natural food. Our body needs REAL food, nutrients and ingredients to thrive optimally as a healthy person. However it is all too common that many people in America suffer from sickness, inflammation, cardiovascular disease, obesity, and diabetes, to only name a few! The food we eat has a direct correlation to our level of health. You are what you eat as they say. If you want a real healthy body you need to eat real healthy food. GMOs are not real nor are they healthy.
- Are GMOs Harmful? As stated by the NON GMO Project, "Most developed nations do not consider GMOs to be safe. In more than 60 countries around the world, including Australia, Japan, and all of the countries in the European Union, there are significant restrictions or outright bans on the production and sale of GMOs. In the U.S., the government has approved GMOs based on studies conducted by the same corporations that created them and profit from their sale. Increasingly, Americans are taking matters into their own hands and choosing to opt out of the GMO experiment." Many countries have banned the use of GMOs! Even though many people in the United States would LOVE to have their food labeled as a GMO if it is, there is no current food regulation that requires companies to do so. There is a great organization called the NON GMO Project, and their mission is to help label foods that are at least NOT a GMO!
- What Are the Most Common GMO Foods? Sugar Beets, Soy, Canola, Cotton, Corn, Hawaiian Papaya, Alfalfa, and Zucchini and Yellow Summer Squash. Other high-risk products include milk, meat, eggs, and honey because of contamination of feed.
- Tips to Avoid Consuming GMOs:
- Buy Organic when possible
- Avoid Processed Foods
- Look for NON GMO Project Verified Label on foods
- Continue to educate yourself and your family on how to eat a healthy, clean, nourishing diet.
