BATTLE GROUND, Wash. – City crews started their morning rounds Wednesday with the discovery that vandals had damaged several trees in a city park.

But the damage extended beyond the 17 trees in Kiwanis Park. Crews discovered 30 more on Rasmussen Boulevard, eight at Cresap Park and five on Main Street in the southeast part of town.

Pictures from the city show multiple branches broken, bent or cut on the trees. One photo shows at least two trees snapped or cut at the base of their trunks.

According to the city, six trees were so badly damaged they had to be removed. The city estimates it will cost $3,000 to clean up and repair the damage but adds that there may not be enough money to replace lost trees.

The city is asking the public for help in finding whoever was responsible for the damage. It is believed the vandalism occurred Tuesday night, June 18 through the early morning hours of Wednesday, June 19.

The city asks anyone with information about the vandalism to contact Detective Joshua Phelps at 360-342-5242 or at joshua.phelps@cityofbg.org. Anonymous tips can also be left through the city’s website www.cityofbg.org/tips.
