TROUTDALE, Ore. – A 31-year-old woman who was at the wheel of an SUV when it rolled onto its top along Interstate 84, killing her 9-year-old daughter, was arrested Friday.
Mattie Spino of Dallesport, Wash., is facing charges of DUII, manslaughter, assault, reckless endangering and reckless driving.
The crash happened around 7:20 p.m. Thursday on eastbound I-84, just east of Exit 17.
According to police, there were five children and two adults riding in a Ford Expedition when the driver somehow lost control, went sideways and the vehicle flipped several times, landing on its top.
A 9-year-old girl was killed and a 7-year-old boy was airlifted to a hospital. The others were taken to a hospital by ambulance.
The crash closed Interstate 84 in both directions Thursday evening.
Spino is being held at the Multnomah County Detention Center.
The grandfather of the children said the oldest child in the car, a boy, is Spino's son, who is the half-brother of the girl killed and the 7-year-old boy who was injured. The 7-year-old has been released from the hospital.
We took a look at her driving record and discovered that she has had a number of traffic issues that date back to 2002 - everything from not wearing a seatbelt to not buckling up kids and driving without a license.
