PORTLAND, Ore. – Here we go again.
The westbound lanes of I-84 between I-205 and I-5 closed at 11 p.m. Saturday night. They will re-open by 5 a.m. Monday morning.
Oregon Department of Transportation crews paved the highway during the previous two weekend closures. This weekend they will work to install new signs and re-configure the ramp from I-84 to I-5.
The new approach to I-5 will feature just one lane with access to I-5 north and two lanes to I-5 south. That replaces the current I-5 north ramp configuration that requires quick decisions and has led to rear-end and sideswipe crashes, according to ODOT.
Currently 67 percent of traffic goes onto I-5 southbound compared to just 33 percent picking the northbound lanes.
ODOT also recommends you avoid using Marine Drive as an alternate route around the closure. It will be closed for a triathlon.
