TROUTDALE, Ore. – A 52-year-old Troutdale man died in a house fire early Sunday morning.

Neighbors saw the fire and rescued the man’s mother from the burning house. She is expected to survive.

"We kicked in the front door and she was on the floor in the living room, and the whole house was engulfed," said neighbor Selden Stafford. "I just grabbed her and pulled her down the ramp. I didn't know what else to do. I had to get her away from the house because it was just engulfed."

The fire started at around midnight at 817 SW Sunset Way. Firefighters said the home soon became fully engulfed and started to spread to at least one neighboring home. Police arrived and helped neighbors get to safety while fire crews put out the fire.

The cause of the fire has not been determined. Police said neighbors told them someone lit fireworks in the area earlier that evening.

The name of the man who died has not been released.

Volunteers with the Red Cross are helping neighbors affected by the fire.
