FAIRVIEW, Ore. – There won’t be any swimming at a Sunday triathlon at Blue Lake Park in Fairview.

A toxic algae bloom prompted Multnomah County health officials to close Blue Lake, where swimming sections of the MidSummer Triathlon were scheduled to be held. They said neighbors noticed an algae bloom on Thursday.

Hundreds of competitors got the word Friday night.

“Swimming’s my best section and running’s my worst section so it’s definitely not going to help me at all,” said competitor Tyson Allred.

Toxic algae is dangerous for humans and animals. Swallowing or inhaling water droplets should be avoided, as well as skin contact with water by humans or animals.

It’s unclear when the pond will reopen, health officials said.
