HILLSBORO, Ore. – Washington County sheriff’s deputies arrested a 24-year-old Hillsboro man who they said led them on a chase in a stolen van before crashing into a ditch Sunday morning.
Sgt. Bob Ray said a deputy in Hillsboro saw a van drive partially into a ditch where a man jumped out. The deputy began to follow the van when it sped away. The driver of the van did not stop.
The deputy learned that the van had been reported stolen in Hillsboro on Saturday, Ray said.
The van drove through Northeast Hillsboro as more law enforcement officers joined the chase. Deputies said on several occasions the driver stopped the van and intentionally backed it toward the law enforcement vehicles.
The driver continued onto the Southeast Tualatin Valley Highway where he drove into a ditch. The van rolled onto its side.
Deputies arrested Baldemar Daniels-Torres. He faces charges including attempt to elude, unlawful use of a weapon (the van), attempted felony assault and reckless driving. Deputies took Daniels-Torres to the Washington County Jail. Bail was set at $80,000.
No one was hurt during the chase.
