HILLSBORO, Ore. -- Gunshots rang out Friday night during a traffic stop that left a man dead, Hillsboro police said.

Police pulled over a car at Southeast 13th and Maple at about 9:30 p.m., according to Lt. Mike Rouches.

He said drug dogs were called to the traffic stop and alerted police that something might be in the green Honda Accord.

When police asked the four people to get out of the car they say the front passenger, a man in his late 20s, opened fire at one of the officers with a handgun. The officer fell to the ground to avoid the gunfire and was not hit. Her partner returned fire, Rouches said.

The suspect was taken to the hospital but died, he said. The man's name has not been released.

The three other people in the car were taken into custody.

The officer who fell received bumps and bruises. She was taken to the hospital but is expected to be OK. She was not hit with gunfire.

Neighbors said they heard at least four gunshots.

Police said they will not release the names of the officers involved in the shooting until after they have been interviewed by detectives on Monday.

It's unclear if any drugs were found in the car.
