HILLSBORO, Ore. - Hillsboro's former police chief has resigned with a hefty payout.

The Oregonian reports Chief Carey Sullivan received more than $67,000 in severance pay.

The newspaper questioned the city manager about why Sullivan was paid the money. The chief was only supposed to receive a severance if he was fired without cause or if the city manager asked him to resign.

All parties involve claim Sullivan resigned voluntarily.

City manager Michael Brown said he agreed to the payout "in the spirit" of the chief's contract.
