HILLSBORO, Ore. – A 23-year-old woman walking in the middle of a rural highway was hit and killed by a minivan south of Hillsboro early Saturday morning.

Sgt. Bob Ray with the Washington County Sheriff’s Office said the crash happened on the Southwest Hillsboro Highway south of Burkhalter Road at around 12:10 a.m.

Melissa Bernard, 23, of Portland was wearing all black clothing and hitchhiking on the 55 mph road, Ray said. She was apparently walking in the center of the northbound lane when she was hit. She died at the scene.

The driver told deputies he was driving about 55 mph when he hit Bernard. He said he tried to swerve around her but there was another vehicle coming in the opposite direction. He was not hurt in the crash.

Ray said no charges are expected to be filed in this case.
