Fatal crash closes Hwy 43 during evening commute

LAKE OSWEGO, Ore. – A 73-year-old man was killed in a head-on crash on Highway 43 just north of Lake Oswego during Tuesday evening's commute.

Two cars were involved in the crash, according to Lt. Steve Alexander with the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office. The crash happened near the intersection of Hwy 43 and Riverdale Road.

The driver of a PT Cruiser, George Schaefer of Vancouver, Wash., was killed in the crash. Two others were taken to a nearby hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening. The crash happened just after 3 p.m.

According to police, Schaefer was headed southbound on Highway 43 near Southwest Radcliffe Road when he crossed over the center line and struck a Dodge Ram pickup that was pulling a trailer.

The highway was closed until about 8 p.m. on Tuesday.
