MILWAUKIE, Ore. – A police chase ended when a driver crashed his SUV into a power pole early Monday morning.
Milwaukie police said the driver was critically injured.
The incident started with a traffic stop near S.E. Johnson Creek Boulevard and 32nd Avenue. Police said the driver of a Ford Explorer sped away at a high speed.
During the chase, the SUV left the road and struck the railroad tracks, launching it into the air. It hit a power pole and a chain link fence before coming to rest in someone’s front yard near S.E. Campbell Street and Myrtle Street, police said.
The driver got out of the SUV and ran, but officers caught up with him in a nearby yard. He was taken to OSHU in Portland. His name has not been released.
The crash caused a brief power outage in the area. Rail travel was also temporarily delayed while the track was inspected for damage.
