Man smashes display case, steals rings at Portland jewelry store

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Police are searching for a man who smashed a glass display case and stole four rings at a Portland jewelry store.

Sgt. Pete Simpson says North Precinct officers responded to the "smash and grab" robbery Saturday afternoon at Morgan Jewelers at Cascade Station.

Witnesses told officers the suspect shattered the case with a hammer he pulled from a bag. He then grabbed the rings and fled.

The suspect also had a small hatchet in a sheath attached to his belt.

Police say the suspect is bald, 5-foot-7 and appears to be in his 30s. He wore a blue, red and white checkered long-sleeve shirt, blue jeans, red shoes and carried a red bag.
