REDLAND, Ore. - A 5-year-old boy is expected to survive and a 72-year-old man has been charged with driving under the influence of intoxicants after an ugly crash Sunday night on South Fischers Mill Road in Clackamas County.
Witnesses and deputies said the boy was with his aunt and a sibling when their sedan was struck by a truck driven by Norman Dallas of Oregon City.
“I didn’t think anyone could survive that," said witness Amy Bennett. “It was pretty bad.
“I just heard ‘boom’ – looked up – saw the truck up in the air roll five times and a plume of smoke and dust. That happened real fast.”
The boy was flown by Lifeflight and has serious facial injuries. His mother suffered a broken leg.
Deputies believe alcohol was a factor in the crash. Dallas was arrested taken to the Clackamas County Jail on six total counts related to the accident, including DUII.
Dallas, who declined KATU's request for an interview, was scheduled to be arraigned Monday afternoon.
Early reports incorrectly indicated the driver of the sedan was the children's mother.
