SALEM, Ore. – A Salem man walked into the Marion County Jail on Thursday morning and confessed to sexually abusing a young girl, according to a Marion County Sheriff’s Office spokesman.

Eddie Luter, 35, told a deputy at the jail that he had been sexually abusing a 12-year-old girl who lived with him and his wife, sheriff’s spokesman Don Thompson said.

The girl had been staying with Luter and his wife since 2010 while her parents live and work in Micronesia.

Luter told deputies that the assaults only began in January of this year and continued through March, Thompson said. Deputies said Luter confessed that the assaults happened while his wife was at work and that she was not aware of his actions.

After the confession, deputies tracked down the girl who confirmed the abuse and provided more details, Thompson said. The victim said she didn’t report anything because she feared for her own safety.

Luter was arrested on six counts of rape and six counts of sexual abuse. He is being held without bail and is due in court Friday afternoon.

The girl was placed in the care of a relative, Thompson said. Investigators are also still working to contact the girl’s parents in Micronesia.
