PORTLAND, Ore. – Police are looking for a man who robbed a Southeast Portland convenience store and ran away with the cash register Saturday night.
Police said at around 9:45 p.m., a masked man armed with what appeared to be a handgun walked into KC’s Mini Market, located at 7474 Southeast 72nd Avenue, and demanded money.
Luanne McCracken, the store's owner and only employee, refused to give him any money.
"He's ordering me to come open the cash register," she said. "I'm telling him 'no, no.'"
The suspect set the gun on the counter, grabbed the cash register and ran away on 72nd Avenue.
"He grabbed the whole register and ran out the door."
McCracken, a single mother of two, says she works seven days a week and can't afford a staff.
"I'm a single woman. A lot of people know that here. They think I'm an easy target," said McCracken. "I think it's really sad. We struggle day to day just to survive."
McCracken said the man didn't get away with very much money. She's thankful she's OK.
The suspect is described as a black man with a medium build. He was wearing a dark jacket with blue jeans and gloves. Officers said the gun he left behind was an Airsoft replica pistol.
Anyone with information about the robbery is asked to call 503-823-0405.
One of my buddies just went and bought a pop from her. He paid $20 and told her to keep the change. He said it was the best tasting pops he has has in years.
How old are her kids?
Business like that should have some type of defense!Shot first,ask questions later!
If you think your aim would be good enough in a frightening situation keep a can of Wasp Hornet first close by. Reaches like 20 ft. I think.
@Diane Jauken WD40 and a lighter will work great too!
a single Mother Alone a robber with a Gun . She should of Been armed and shot is self defense Period
Gee Katu, good story, every one and their bother now knows there is a panic bottom on the remote.Â
Just imagine if she had said the oh so terrible "n" word while being robbed. She'd be in more trouble than the thief. BS.
@last boyscout I see what you're doing there.  You must not be a fan of the "hate crime" theory.  If you study up on it and pay attention, you'll get it all figured out. Â
@Sundowner @last boyscout Hate crimes deserve as much validity as man made global warming. If you say "I love you" while you're killing someone, should your sentence be less? That proves the hypocrisy of the theory. Â
@last boyscout Brilliant analogy....let's see, you have 'hate crimes' and 'man-made global warming' in your rant, if you just add in 'Obama was born in Kenya', I think you've hit today's trifecta.
No, I would have shot him with my real pistol.
See I can't agree with the clerk in this story. Â It would have been easier to give up the cash. Â Now they are our the cash and gotta buy a new register. Â Personally I could have seen the difference between a "real" gun and an air soft and I would have started laughing at him.

@Dr. RawdogIf she's not shopping for a new man, she's sure advertising that she's there alone the whole time the store is open. Â After the robbery and this story, she might as well put up a big banner across the front of the store, "Single woman here alone -- c'mon in and rob me or ask me out".
@Sundowner @Dr. Rawdog Yeah that wasn't very bright.. She should've said "I have a security guard but he was on his lunch break" or at least not announced she's there alone.. Time for her to get a 'little buddy" to keep behind the counter..Â
@NotAChance @cwpholder @Sundowner @Dr. RawdogÂ
???? Â I didn't say/imply she was...
@cwpholder @Sundowner @Dr. Rawdog How do you know she's looking for a man?
He walked out with the money anyway. Had the gun been a real one she might have been killed over a few dollars. I don't think I would have given over the money either but I would have been armed to protect myself.
oregon should enact a law for business owners to shoot first in the event of a robbery attempt ... then sit back and watchhh these kinds of crimes disappear
@Barb Klinger Good luck with that! Gun control nuts and liberal soccer mom's don't want anything to do with that.
Jewel.... Not for long. If that robber wouldve ran into the window on his way out, he couldve sued. And abouthaving guns, do you pay attention to ANYTHING!
I always sit with a hot kettle of water behind my cash register. Wana know how it feels? Then try to rob my store. lol
Oh and hell yes i would resist.
Jewel cowart depends if its in or or wash cause i stabbed my moms bf who was brutaly beating her mind u i was only 13 and i got charged cause their are no self def laws in the state of wash
@Crystal Rose Clark Huh? What? Do you ever use capital letters or proper punctuation? Sure would make your posts a lot easier to read.
It's so sad that she's having to struggle so hard and then gets ripped off. Just trying to make a living.
Jasmine.. No she wouldn't you can have guns and protect yourself with deadly force
Problem is, if she wouldve shot him, she wouldve gone to jail for even having the gun, plus shooting him. and who said our constatutional rights arent being taken away?
No. I would have shot him as she should have.
That's why you keep a 12 gauge loaded with 00-Buck behind the counter... solves that problem real quick!
I wonder if she sells crack pipes - I mean roses in a tube
Why do guys think it's okay to steal from stores?
$5.55 for a pack of Marlboro red? How much did the register weigh?
@Lost River If you think $5.55 is high for Marlboro reds, you should step over the bridge to vancouver. You would think this lady is giving them away.
the old single woman ploy  hahaha  yeah, thats my fault.Â
As Monte Hall would ask" would you like to keep your airsoft gun or trade it for the cash register?
This really makes me ANGRY! This lady is busting her rear 7 days a week to support herself & her kids, rather than lay out on the govt dole as so many do and she gets robbed!!!
Good for her not being a victim!! Â But the fact some scumbag tried to rob this hard working woman REALLY makes my blood boil!
LOVE your idea RalphCramden!!! If I make it to Portland in the next week or so, I'll try to find the place.Â
I have an idea. This woman works so hard and we need to support her.
For the next month if you are in the area stop by and buy something. If it costs $1 give her $5 and walk out the door. Or if is costs $5 give her $10 and walk out. You get the idea.
This will send a message to her. We care and want to support her for her work ethic and determination to not give into this low life POS criminal.
@RalphCramden Feed the kitty for the next robber?
@RalphCramden And you know, I bet this woman would pay it forward, that's what keeps this planet rolling !
@RalphCramden Next time I'm out that way I think I'll do that.
@RalphCramden I wish I could "Like" this post numerous times!!
Great idea!!Â
Where is SE 72nd?? Anyone??Â

@Dr. Rawdog @cwpholder That could be a corner in vancouver
@cwpholder @SundownerÂ
It's not as bad as you would think. Kids play, baseball leagues are there all summer, crime is not as high as it is near the crime train and any shootings are all gang banger on gang banger and mostly black on black.
In fact Vancouver seems like they are getting more shootings that in SE Portland.
@Sundowner @cwpholder Does Gresham really count for anything?
@cwpholder In general, the river is the boundary for E vs W, Burnside is the boundary for N vs S.  Gresham doesn't count.  =)
@Sundowner @cwpholder "Felony Flats" Ohh great and I have no CWP for Oregon.. Humm better not go alone..Â
I know the general areas.. NW is across the bridge, Gresham, things like that. I just get a bit confused where NE stops & SE begins..Â
@cwpholder As often as you're on this site, I'm sure you've become familiar with various areas in Portland.....this little store is in an area affectionately referred to as Felony Flats.  If you do the street view on Google maps, you'll see why.
@cwpholder Just type in the address.  https://maps.google.com/
@Sundowner @RalphCramden @cwpholder @Dr. RawdogÂ
Yeah ok I admit that.. BUT it was a serious question.. The map helped.. I'm familiar with say 82nd, Sandy, Division the main streets but have no clue where Flavel is so that's what I was after.. Where it is in relation to say- Stark, Burnside etc.. I'm from HickTown USA but I find my way around pretty well for a country girl. :PÂ
@Dr. Rawdog Accused?  Nah -- it's a given.  =)
@RalphCramden @cwpholder @Dr. Rawdog C'mon Ralph....the question begged for a sarcastic answer.  First, there's Google maps that'll take you right to a street view of the store.  Then there's the whole notion that *generally speaking* numerical streets are in....wait for it....numerical order.
@RalphCramden @cwpholder @Dr. Rawdog Thanks..:)  That makes me feel better... At least I'm not in it alone.. :)
@cwpholder @Dr. RawdogÂ
Rawdog has superior intelligence (if you don't believe that just ask him) and talks down to everyone.
Don't feel bad from his insults. Making nice comments is not his style.
@Dr. Rawdog @cwpholder So funny.Â
I'm from WA & don't know SE area but I'm not an idiot,,
Thanks for playing tho-
@cwpholder
It's not far from 82nd and Flavel. Just go 10 blocks south on Flavel to 72nd. It's an old gas station converted to a small store.
7474 Southeast 72nd Avenue
Flavel runs east/west, not north/south. just sayin...
@RalphCramden @cwpholder  Thanks a bunch! From that info I think I can find it.. I'm familiar with 82nd. :)
