PORTLAND, Ore. – Detectives with the Portland Police Gang Enforcement Team arrested a 19-year-old man on charges including attempted murder in connection with a shooting that wounded a man last week.
Rasool Islam was arrested June 14. Police said he shot 19-year-old Amel Johnson near East Burnside and 148th Avenue on June 13. Johnson survived the shooting.
Sgt. Pete Simpson said detectives “developed probable cause” to arrest Islam in the shooting and began conducting surveillance at his home in Southeast Portland. Police watched him leave his home and members of the Special Emergency Reaction Team (SERT) stopped his car and arrested him, Simpson said.
SERT members also served a search warrant at Islam’s home.
Police took Islam to the Multnomah County Jail on charges of attempted murder, assault (2nd degree), unlawful use of a weapon and felon in possession of a firearm.
Islam and Johnson are both gang associates, Simpson said.
