Accident victim gives birth

GRESHAM, Ore. - The Gresham woman who was hit by a suspected drunk driver while she was pregnant has given birth to a girl.

Nineteen-year-old Cayla Wilson was five-and-a-half months pregnant when the crash happened in April. Wilson has remained hospitalized since the crash.

Her father said she underwent an emergency cesarean section two weeks ago. She remains at Oregon Health and Science University.

About this crash
Cayla Wilson was seriously injured while on her way home from a job interview in Oregon City.

During the drive, a Jeep slammed into her white sedan on Southeast Jenne Road between Foster and McKinley roads. The man behind the wheel of the Jeep reportedly was 52-year-old Jack Whiteacker, who police said was driving with a suspended license, was wanted for a parole violation, was already wanted for heroin possession in Clackamas County and may have been driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. He also had no insurance.

"He shouldn't have even been driving," said Denise Wilson, Cayla's mother, in an earlier interview with KATU. "My daughter was 15 minutes away from home."

Cayla was originally admitted to intensive care. Her family said she had regained brain activity and eye movement as of April 27.
