Woman who fell between walls will not be charged with a crime

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — The woman who spent four hours wedged between the walls of two buildings in downtown Portland will not be charged with a crime.
Sgt. Pete Simpson, a police spokesman, said detectives investigated a lead that 30-year-old Anita Mann was a graffiti artist trying to deface one of the buildings when she fell early Wednesday, but there were no marks on the property and no paint cans at the scene.
Detectives also checked into whether Anita Mann is the woman's real name. It is.
"The speculation of course was: 'Anita Mann? Wasn't that one of Bart Simpson's names?'" he said, referring to the prank-playing animated TV character.
It's still unknown what the woman was doing on the building at 3:45 a.m. and how she fell into a space 8 inches wide. Firefighters cut a hole through a concrete garage wall and used an air bag and a soapy lubricant to free her.
Simpson said detectives did not interview Mann, and the investigation went no further than making sure her identify was true and she was not attempting to deface property. Nobody has come forward to press charges of trespassing, the police spokesman said, adding that what she endured is probably punishment enough.
Mann has not spoken the media. She released a statement to The Oregonian on Thursday in which she did not address how got into her predicament.
"The events of the morning were awful and ridiculously frightening," the statement said. "I am extremely thankful for the outcome of the situation I found myself facing. I profusely apologize for the disturbance and damage this has created."
One of the walls Mann fell between is part of Gretchen Kafoury Commons, a low-income apartment complex.
Shelley Marchesi, spokeswoman for Home Forward, formerly known as the Housing Authority of Portland, said the agency has called four contractors for estimates to repair the wall that had to be cut. Staff members think the cost could run several thousand dollars, she said.
Really?! When the first responders asked her what her name is they heard "Anita Mann." What she really said in a deep southern drawl was "Ah... I need a man!"
Seal off the roofline - yes. And the city - should be inspecting all other building for dangerous scenarios just like this - that somehow passed the eyes of the professional inspectors of our city in the first place.Â
Â
This woman with the name we still are not quite sure is legally hers - shame on her. 30 years old - most probably seeking out illegal activity on top of that building? Come on...
And accomplice probably got rid of the illegal graffiti evidence. Or the police just looked the other way - they determined outside of the laws of our city - that she has been punished enough.Â
Â
But has she LEGAL RESPONSIBILITY to the property owners. And to the citizens of this city. To monetarily compensate them for the the damage to their property and to the city - for the cost of all of this totally unnecessary rescue. If only she had not been suspiciously and most probably illegally on top of that building in the first and last place - with a suspect agenda in mind - at 3:45 am in the morning.Â
Hope the bid also includes sealing off the crack at the top of the roofline where she started the downward process in the first place.Â
Her name says it all. That's one way to catch a man..or several men catch you. Hey, we ladies like our men in uniform. Just not sure I would want one THAT badly. Talk about a way to feel skinny! Just hoping her chest was reasonably small before because it sure is now. I know..bad jokes, but you have to admit..it's kinda funny.
"It's still unknown" ...???? She can't tell anyone.??? Is it a secret????
@Rob C 503 Ah, me thinks the police of our city - needed to legally DEPOSE her. That is how you get the truth from people, PPB.
Â
Especially whhen they clearly have been engaging in suspect criminal actions as overt and obvious as this chronically illegal acting GRAFITTI "artist". This almost middle aged, knows better, illegal acting grafitti "artist" who was gifted with a free pass for her illegal actions of choice. By a colluding progressive Portland Oregon police force.
Â
@Rob C 503 It can't be good or she would be talking.
They should have made her tell them exactly what she was doing to get there before getting her out.
Anita should sue this building complex for this type of situation to even be possible.
@browntown You're kidding right? Dummy would have straight fallen to her death if it weren't for the crack - either way, SHE put herself in that situation. Are you going to sue the city when you step in front of a moving vehicle and get hit because the city put a road there?
@browntown .....yeah that's it sue, sue, sue. You are part of the societal problem in this country.
@Rob C 503  @browntown How about the legal culpability of our city - approving the construction of and naming this building after a public official - and not having competent city inspectors pick up on the fact this building was a safety risk - all along. Don't have to sue anyone to publicly stand up and acknowledge all of that - City of Portland, Oregon.Â
Â
Don't sue - just DEPOSE this woman and get to the bottom of the truth about it all - from her. Including fingerprinting and DNA swabbing the inside of her mouth - to confirm who she exactly is. For starters.Â
Â
Â
 @englishdaisy Â
Which is completely illegal. Get off your damn high horse, you sound you are afraid to venture into the space called, "outside".
Innocent until proven guilty? Forget habeas corpus, she was stuck in a wall at 3:45 and us good Christians are always asleep or praying at that time, right?
@Rob C 503  @browntown The building should "sue" her for damages incurred to there wall for her tresspassing and getting stuck. Especially if she won't explain a legit reason for being up there.
@Liberty4_WA @browntown ...now that...I'll go for !
anita wedge of cheese from this planet or California?
"It's still unknown what the woman was doing on the building at 3:45 a.m" It's downtown Portland! It's full for idiots, look at the Mayors and city counsel. Enough said.
She was literally stuck between a rock and a hard place!
Allow me to have some fun hehe:
"The speculation of course was: 'Anita Mann? Wasn't that one of Bart Simpson's names?'" he said, referring to the prank-playing animated TV character.
Â
Simpson ,an animated TV character said, detectives did not interview Mann,
I bet she ends up on an episode of "World's Dumbest". Â Poor thing, I'm glad she's alright.
All in all it's just another brick in the wall.
@xilef regnu She was just looking for Jimmy Hoffa.
Is she going to pay for the wall?
@2012 Hope and Change .......the owners should not have to pay for her stupidity.
Grafiti is a crime! A crime is a crime, even if you end up dead! Charge her! She deserves to be charged for her crime, even if she almost lost her life......OMG, He is going to kill her! ooooops never mind, he borke his wrist, we will let him go! same damn thing!
@Dale Quakenbush Lide in The New America:
Guilty as inferred or
If the Police claim to have a "lead", you're guilty and should be put away.
Try reading the US and Oregon constitutions. Do you even know what they are??
@Dale Quakenbush   Dude, can you read? The story said this: "there were no marks on the property and no paint cans at the scene." The ignorance of people these days never cease to amaze me.
Keepin' it weird!
Â
Â
@Icarus thats Portland for ya! "Keeping Portland Weird"
Â
@Dale Quakenbush ........more like keepin it stupid.
This story is so annoying! charge the idiot for the repair costs for getting stuck in the wall.Â
I think the space she fell in was about 8 inches wide...that's 8"...in case you missed it printed in the article.......TWICE!!
Amazing that she didn't even lose her glasses on this vertical trip!
@portlandborn83, Ok now that is funny.LOL
I missed the news segment (so this is second hand from my wife) but they said there is a smoking area up there but she have had to climb over a rail then walk a wide ledge over to the point she fel,.....clearly she had to make an effort to end up where she did.
What is funny is her name...Anita Mann! Say it out loud lol! No wonder they were investigating her name and whether it is real...
Â
I also wonder if she revealed her graffity tag name or not and whether they will investigate other places she has done graffiti...
@portlandborn83 The article says someone mentioned she MIGHT be doing graffiti, no paint or evidence was found, it remains a mystery.  Unless she was looking for a certain mann up there.. maybe a firemann?
@portlandborn83 Will this end up as an episode of The Simpsons?
Somehow I don't think she'll be a repeat offender, or is that repeat descender, again any time soon.

Nothing about this story makes sense. I would think the authorities would want to know why she was on top of the building to start with. I'm glad she's okay and they were able to successfully remove her. She's fortunate not to be facing any charges or footing the bill for what it took to rescue her.

@portlandborn83Â Â Hmm... another reading impaired Portlandite
@portlandborn83  Nope, I love me! I see you deleted your stupid comment though. Truth hurts, eh?
@wondering You know something troll, you should get a life look in the mirror, why you hatin' on people, is it because you hate yourself?
Â
@portlandborn83 Read again portlandborn83. "detectives investigated a lead that 30-year-old Anita Mann was a graffiti artist trying to deface one of the buildings early Wednesday, but there were no marks on the property and no paint cans at the scene"
@DeaconBugg I have an idea that the authorities *do* know, but are keeping silent-- likely because the woman would be highly embarrassed if the truth were known by the general public.
All I can say is she's very, very lucky to be alive looking at how tight that gap was.....I've heard of people falling into a crevasse in the ice and suffocating....if the fall doesn't kill you, just the act of breathing will make it worse....as you breath out, you will slip farther in and eventually can't breath at all as the ice crushes against the chest. Anyway, "keep Portland weird".....
I bet she was screaming her name while stick.
Â
"help! I need a man!"
Â
a fireman, to be precise.
@Don't worry I am a doctor I went to graduate school with a guy who was married and a father of 5. He explained to me his primary motivation for going on for his PhD was because he wanted to be able to use the pickup line: 'Ma'am, don't be afraid to take your clothes off, it's ok, I'm a doctor'.  Of course, the subject of his graduate degree was not even remotely related to medicine.

@ThePosterFormerlyKnownAsPhredE  "Apologies for the foray into the obscure and only tangentially related." It's Friday!
@HenryBowman Yes sir! Thank you sir.
i meant stuck. not stick. wow.
@Don't worry I am a doctor  You appear to be new here, doctor, so we'll let this one go, but in the future, please keep in mind that there are folks who post here whose soul purpose, their calling, if you will, is to point out grammatical, punctuational, and spelling errors. If we were to start policing ourselves, well, it would quickly lead to anarchy.
Â
By the way, you have three sentences in your two posts that begin with lower case letters.

@Fae  Aha! So, you're one of THEM!
 @HenryBowman  @Don't worry I am a doctor Don't you mean "sole"?
