PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland police detectives are asking for the public’s help finding a robbery suspect they’re calling “The Nerdy Bandit.”
The man is suspected of robbing two Portland clothing stores and trying to rob a third last month.
The first robbery happened on Oct. 4 at the American Apparel store at 3410 SE Hawthorne Blvd., according to police. The suspect walked in just before 8 p.m. and gave an employee a demand note that said he was armed. He walked out of the store with an undisclosed amount of cash.
On Oct. 11, the suspect tried to rob an American Apparel store located at 1234 SW Stark St., but when he gave an employee a demand note, the employee ran away from the register. The suspect ran out of the store without any money.
Two days later on Oct. 13, investigators believe the same suspect robbed an Urban Outfitters store at 2320 NW Westover Rd. This time, police said the man was armed with a handgun. He ran out the back entrance of the store after an employee gave him cash.
Police said in all three incidents, the suspect browsed for clothes for a few minutes before approaching the employee.
The suspect is described as a white man in his early 20s to early 30s. He is between 5’8’’ and 6 feet tall with a skinny build, police said. He has brown hair and yellow teeth. He wore black-rimmed glasses and a different hat during each robbery.
Police released a forensic sketch of the man. Witnesses told police the suspect looked “nerdyish”.
Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $1,000 for information that leads to an arrest in the case.
