PORTLAND, Ore. – Police arrested four people after a scuffle outside Terry Schrunk Plaza early Tuesday morning.
Sgt. Pete Simpson said officers approached a group of campers who were setting up tents on the sidewalk outside the plaza at 12:30 a.m.
While officers asked the group to remove their tents, they also approached Andrew Matthew Bennett after he jaywalked, Simpson said.
As police began to issue Bennett a citation, many of the campers “became rowdy,” Simpson said in a news release. He said one of the campers, 19-year-old Ashley Anna Marie Franzen, threw a punch at one of the officers but missed.
Officers took Franzen into custody.
Simpson said another woman, 24-year-old Alexandra Chanel Barrett, kicked the door of the central precinct while officers were taking Franzen and Bennett inside. One officer was hurt, but the injury was not serious. Barrett was also taken into custody.
Police later learned Barrett is a suspect in an assault outside City Hall on Sept. 3.
A fourth person, 49-year-old Jessie Angel, was arrested for “swinging a chain around during the disturbance,” Simpson said. Angel was charged with criminal mischief and disorderly conduct.
Bennett was charged with giving false information to police.
Franzen was charged with disorderly conduct and attempted assault on a public safety officer.
Barrett faces charges including assaulting a public safety officer, two additional counts of assault, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.
Police took all four people to the Multnomah County Jail.
