PORTLAND, Ore. - Can Portland break the world's record for most people hugging a tree in one place at one time?
We gave it a shot this weekend at the Hoyt Arboretum in southwest Portland.
On Saturday, over a thousand people showed up there for an attempt at winning the coveted title. Portland is known for its trees after all.
All we needed was 703 tree huggers to break the current world record from 2011. That's when 702 people hugged trees in the Delamere Forest in Cheshire, United Kingdom.
Here in Portland, organizers told us more than 1,000 people signed up to hug a tree and hundreds more showed up at the last minute to be on standby.
By all accounts, we did break the record. But of course we have to wait for the official say-so from Guinness World Records. Organizers will be sending them video from the event, along with the final numbers, so we'll have to wait for verification.
But let's go ahead and celebrate anyway - head outside this weekend and show a tree some love with a big, giant hug. And send us a photo!
