Antifreeze in dog bowl: 'There's no way it wasn't malicious'
»Play Video
TIGARD, Ore. - Antifreeze is highly toxic to dogs, so when some was discovered in a bowl at a local dog park it raised some serious concerns.
A dog bowl with the tell-tale green liquid inside it was found Sunday behind a culvert at Ash Avenue Dog Park, located at 12770 S.W. Ash Avenue in Tigard.
Christian Rajotte is the one who came across the bowl and he took his dog, Lilly, to a veterinarian to get checked out. It's a good thing he did because it turned out she did have the toxic chemical in her system and needed the antidote.
"She's part of the family," Rajotte said. "We love her to death. I would have been crushing not to have her."
A dog that ingests just a few tablespoons of antifreeze can suffer kidney failure in six to 24 hours. We haven't heard of any other dogs getting sick but Rajotte is angry and believes someone strategically hid the bowl of antifreeze at the park.
"There's no way it wasn't malicious," he said.
Most dog owners we talked to at the park said they plan to bring their own water and dog bowl and check the area closely when they arrive. There is also a warning on the door telling people to call police if they see any strange-looking liquids.
How can you tell if your dog has been poisoned by antifreeze? Basically, they will appear to be drunk and will lean or fall over.
Defenseless dogs and antifreeze today, maybe our kids and something worse next time. I'd like to see the police put a full court press on figuring out who did this. Surveillance resources, fingerprinting, cell phone locates etc...the whole 9 yards. Spend the money now, catch someone who is maybe just "experimenting" with violence and dangerous behavior...maybe save the rest of us from some real threat later on.
I'm so glad they found this stuff and dumped it and this dog is OK, this is why I'd NEVER take my dog to one of these places EVER, I hope they catch this sicko and feed him or her some antifreeze and see how they like it, but they will probably only get their hands slapped as that idiot who put the dog in a 350 degree oven, we need to get rid of these pansy judges and put some REAL judges in place to hand out meaningful sentences to press upon the meaning of severe sentences to the people who have no regard for life even if it's an animal's life.Â
Psychopathic monster. I'm glad Lilly is okay, what a gorgeous dog.
Geez, if you are going to attempt to kill dogs in a public place, why use something as visibly obvious as anti-freeze. Goes to show that the perps are dumb as dirt.

The only thing I know that can save a Dog from ethylene glycol (anti-freeze) is Vodka. Used in a drip down the throat 4 to 8 shots every 8 hours. Vodka neutralize anti-freeze. Hurry time is of the essence or the kidneys will shut down. Pass this on. If you don't believe me Google this. Vodka saves dog. Â
@Truthmonster Grain alcohol is not the treatment of choice and is not safe for the layperson to administer. It's good to get to a vet asap with NO DELAY in anti-freeze poisoning cases.
"...
Ethanol is still commonly used as the antidote for antifreeze/ethylene glycol poisoning in pets. It is cheap, readily available and very effective in preventing ethylene glycol from forming toxic products. But it does have some drawbacks. It has to be periodically readministered as it is metabolized and lost. The vet has to closely monitor pets that are receiving it to be sure they do not receive toxic amounts. Ethanol in itself can cause coma, respiratory arrest (stop breathing) or liver damage if too much is given.
Ethanol, in itself, can cause undesirable blood changes if it is not well managed (hyperosmolality and metabolic acidosis). Your veterinarian can review treatment guidelines for using ethanol here.
Those drawbacks in the use of ethanol led to development of an alternative product, fomepizole (4-Methylpyrazole= 4-MP = Antizol). Fomepizole does not need to be administered as frequently and it does not have the side effects of ethanol. Fomepizole is not recommended for use in cats. Its only disadvantage is its expense. You can read more about fomepizole use in general, here.
There are other things that must be done:
The petâs acid-base balance (blood acidity below 7.3) needs to be brought back up to normal. This is done through the administration of fluids that contain sodium bicarbonate and by checking the petâs urine or blood pH periodically to regulate the amount given.
Things need to be done to speed the removal of ethylene glycol from the petâs blood before it can break down into toxic products. This means urinating it out of your pet's body. Giving intravenous fluids usually increase urine flow â so fluid administration is important.
If kidney damage has already occurred, the pet will not be able to increase its urine flow. In those cases, a technique called peritoneal dialysis can also help flush out EG. In some large veterinary centers, the same hemodialysis used to cleans the blood of human EG victims can be used on pets as well.
Pets that are already developing life-threatening complications need other support - things like temperature maintenance and airways protection (intubation).
Some of these pets develop critically low blood calcium levels that can lead to convulsions. Some veterinarians give calcium for this; but others worry that the added calcium will speed the formation of toxic calcium oxalate, so they give anti-seizure medicines like diazepam or midazolam (Valium , Versed).

This criminal should be apprehended and beaten!
@browntown What is this Saudi Arabia?
Â
@1911R1 @browntown maybe if we started treating criminals like criminals we wouldn't have so many repeat offenders. crimes committed with malicious intent should be harshly punished.
@1911R1 @browntown Unlike people in some other countries we don't torture our dogs. Sounds like you need to move over there.
What is it with the people who get off on hating so much? They hate animals so much that they have to either kill another's pet, or hoard animals to the point of death. That to me is hate - because if they truly loved the animals, they would not see them in pain, or have at least have compassion for them to take care of them.Â
@washcomom wth does that comment have to do with the story? i don't know why people drink and drive, it's rediculous that someone is so selfish that they would put other people in danger just because they were to lazy or cheap to get a cab. *equally valid point that has nothing to do with this story*
This could be a false alarm without lab work done. My dog's water bowl has been sitting out in the
backyard during the last three days of heavy rain. It looks all discolored.
I think algae and fir cones that have fallen in may  have changed the color.
I hope the Park's dish is just brackish water too.Â
Listen to the video again this is no false alarm.  The news states clearly the dog tested positive for antifreeze.  Was in the hospital for two days what more proof do you want.  Just accept the fact that there are nuts out there.@Older than dirtÂ
@Older than dirt "It's a good thing he did because it turned out she did have the toxic chemical in her system and needed the antidote." Not a false alarm.
@Older than dirt GEEZ!  You are being a bad dog keeper. CLEAN YOUR DOG'S BOWL!! Rainwater is not clean. Your dog's saliva in this water makes for bacteria growing. Algae and fir cones in water can make your dog sick. Tell you what:
YOU drink from the dog's dish and give your dog your precious bottled water and see how YOU like it!
@whirledworld  @Older than dirt Yeah, and the eat their own poop, lick their ass and return to their own vomit and a little dirty water is going to hurt them...God lord, what morons!
Â
@1911R1 @whirledworld @Older than dirt Those "morons" seem to know just a little more than you.
@Older than dirt Aren't you washing your dog's water dish and replacing the water a couple times daily? Dogs don't like drinking dirty water, but since they have no other option, they will drink what they have.
Why did they even run this story? They don't even know if it really was antifreeze. Would they have run it if it had been kool-aid? I guess they have to have something to report. If it does turn out to be poison, run another story so I can comment on what kind of a sick low life wants to harm animals.
KGW reported that a dog had become sick after drinking it and spent two days at the vet's, who found traces of antifreeze. Not sure why that valuable bit of info was left off. Comment away.
Okay, they've updated the story now!
@Pointblank Another twitter news report.. No journalism needed

@Dr. Rawdog Or pit bulls?
@Dr. Rawdog bottom-sucking troll. Go away.
@shewiz  @Dr. Rawdog Troll schmoll -- it was funny.
 @Sundowner @shewiz  @Dr. RawdogÂ
Â
Anti freeze is telltale.. and still not funny! Gaterade isn't the same shade of green by any means. Can't say dumping it down a drain is alright, but I'd also point out that probably there are more leaks dumping on the ground from cars in all aspects of chemicals that get washed into the sewer system.
@Khre'Riov Ael i-Mhiessan t'Rllaillieu  @shewiz  @Dr. Rawdog I'm not discounting the story, but it could have been GatorAde or 50 other green liquids....it doesn't sound like the people who found it rushed it off to the crime lab.  Any concern about where they "disposed" of it?  I'd hate to think they just decided, "Oh, this could (as in "didn't", but still) hurt a dog....we'll just dump it over here down the storm drain.  Then everything will be all better". Â
@Sundowner  @shewiz  @Dr. Rawdog Not at all funny..
sickos is everywhere
Why? It's a dog park. That's where the dogs are supposed to be. Leave them alone. If you don't like dogs, don't go there. Go some place else.Â
I don't understand people that have to be cruel.
Glad I don't live in the metro area where my dogs may fall victim to some POS that is trying to kill dogs. Mine have a couple of acres that is fully fenced with dig guards so never get outside of the area.
Â
Kill one of my dogs and the person will be entering the gates of hell as mine is entering the gates of dog heaven

@Dr. Rawdog  @FreerideNOT You have been grossly misinformed.
@Dr. Rawdog I believe that all creatures possess a spirit which animates the mortal body and when the mortal body dies, the spirit leaves it.
Some dogs have more soul than most humans. I venture that my dogs have much more soul than you do.
Â
BTW: Are you really a troll as many suggest?
@Dr. Rawdog  @FreerideNOT ~ Those "religious texts" are written by humans... they don't know everything, by a long shot...
Antifreeze poisoning is a horrible way for an animal to die. If you hate animals that much you need some help.
@old_dollor Do I still need help if I only dislike certain species?
@Sundowner  @old_dollor yes, dear Sundowner, you actually do. You don't have to like (be fond of) them, but disliking them  merely for the fact they they exist on the earth as much as you are I, is not fair nor reasonable. Take away species and the web of life goes out of balance in ways it never should. Appreciate them for that. If it's domestic animals that is your issue, then appreciate that they bring solace, love, and more to the humans they live with.
I knew you were just joking, and it is okay to hate some critters (pet monkeys, snakes, spiders) just don't kill them with antifreeze, rat poison is a horrible way for an animal to die as well.
@whirledworld  @Sundowner  @old_dollor So when does your next PBS special air? Love that whole 'web of life' thing, it's like Cousteau lite.
@whirledworld  @old_dollor Oh, jeeez, I feel bad.  I've commented back and forth to the US101 person before and I was making a joke.  There haven't been many times in my life that I haven't had a pet, mostly dogs (I have a crazy 60-lb Boxer 'puppy' right now)....but I don't like reptiles and for me the only good spider is a flat one, flattened by a shoe.  Have a good night. =)
