TUALATIN, Ore. – Firefighters filled a Tualatin church on Saturday for a public memorial service to remember 24-year-old John J. Percin Jr., a West Linn High School graduate who was among 19 firefighters who died in an Arizona wildfire.

Hundreds of firefighters came from around Oregon to attend the memorial at Rolling Hills Community Church. Several firefighters from Arizona also attended.

Many who were there did not know Percin well, but they wanted to pay their respects.

Percin was killed along with 18 other Hotshots on June 30 when they were overrun by a wildfire they were fighting in Arizona. He was raised in Oregon and graduated from West Linn High School, where he played basketball and football. He moved to Arizona almost three years ago.

His family brought him home Wednesday, landing at Portland International Airport with his remains. From there he was driven down a route lined by many of his firefighting brothers and also by members of the public wishing to pay tribute.

Family and friends attended a private memorial on Friday in Lake Oswego.
