Washington unemployment: 9.2%

Washington state's unemployment rate increased to 9.2 percent in August, up from July's revised rate of 8.9 percent. At the same time, employment shrunk by an estimated 8,000 non-farm jobs.

According to the state Employment Security Department, more than 319,000 Washington residents were unemployed and looking for work in July.

Washington's results best the unemployment results out of Oregon. The state of Oregon released its August results, of 12.2 percent, on Monday. (See "Oregon jobless rate ticks up to 12.2 percent.")
