Wealthy Americans have paid the "alternative minimum tax" for years, but now more middle class Americans are finding they have to pay it as well.

It's a tax politicians from both parties have complained about but they've yet to do anything about it.

The AMT or Alternative Minimum Tax has been around for 40 years.

It was originally intended to make sure wealthy Americans couldn't use loopholes or tax breaks to avoid paying their fair share.

The AMT definition of wealthy has failed to take account of inflation over the decades, so more and more Americans have fallen victim.
