Willamette Week unveils the best of Portland
PORTLAND, Ore. – The latest issue of Willamette Week showcases the best Portland has to offer, from the best transsexual owl to the best store.
Willamette Week gets its eclectic range of categories from reader input and over the course of reporting stories throughout the year.
One of the most bizarre categories in the rankings is the Best Transsexual Owl. The honor goes to Julio/Julia, an owl living in the Audubon Society at Forest Park. People thought the owl was a male, but after they weighed the owl, they found out it was a female owl.
With the economy in its current state, people are trying to save money. Willamette Week readers voted the Best Cheap Date is at the Laurelhurst Theater on East Burnside Street. Movies at $3 per person and cheap popcorn and drinks make the typical cost of a date there around $8.75 per person.
Powersliding took the Best Inadvisable New Sport spot. Enthusiasts go around town and find things to slide on, such as railings.
Trillium Artisans, the Best Crafty Collective, works with low-income artists and offers them a place to show their art if they use recycled goods in their works. If you walk into Trillum Artisans, you’ll probably find bike gear bracelets, engine part earrings, and other unique, handcrafted pieces.
Portlanders predictably named Powell’s Books the Best Store.
“Portlanders love Powell’s,” said Kelly Clarke, the Arts and Culture Editor for Willamette Week. “No matter what we do, it comes out on top.”
