Event Description

WALTERS CHAMBER MUSIC SERIES
FEATURING RED SNEAKER, THE OREGON RENAISSANCE BAND,
DE ORGANOGRAPHIA AND THE PORTLAND CELLO PROJECT

Hillsboro, Oregon – The Walters Cultural Arts Center is proud to announce a new concert series called the Walters Chamber Music Series (WCMS). This absolutely unstuffy series is a feast of classical music for listeners of all ages. In its debut season, the 2009-2010 series will consist of eight shows and feature Tylor Neist’s chamber ensemble Red Sneaker along with the Oregon Renaissance Band, De Organographia and The Portland Cello Project. Tickets are $15 in advance and $17 day of show. Walters Chamber Series season tickets are also available: all eight shows for $99 or any four for $49.

The Red Sneaker family friendly concert “Tales and Scales,” in September, will be an evening of narrative music. Red Sneaker musicians will share the stage with actors to weave together music and story in a performance that is perfect for classical music enthusiasts of all ages. Neist and his chamber players’ quest to bring classical music to everyone will draw you into the world of classical music with this engrossing program. It is sure to be a memorable and fun filled evening. Friday, September 18th at 8pm. Tickets are $15 in advance and $17 day of show.

In October, Red Sneaker’s “Fright Night” will give you chills in this strange holiday concert – powerful, haunting and surreal chamber music that is unlike anything usually experienced on a chamber music stage. Friday, October 16th at 8 pm. Tickets are $15 in advance and $17 day of show.

In November, Red Sneaker will bring a rich American tapestry of sound with “American Composers.” A melting pot of cultures is reflected in this concert as Red Sneaker explores America’s search for a musical identity influenced by folk, jazz, blues, and pop styles. Friday, November 20th at 8pm. Tickets are $15 in advance and $17 day of show.

The Oregon Renaissance Band will join us in December for “An Early Christmas from Many Nations” featuring Renaissance and Early Baroque Holiday Music. Thirteen musicians will sing and play period instruments including harp, recorder, sackbuts, curtal, bagpipes, lute, guitar, racket, violin, and others. This group will be directed Philip and Gayle Neuman and sponsored by the Early Music Guild of Oregon. Friday, December 18th at 8 pm. Tickets are $15 in advance and $17 day of show.

The study of a composer’s personal correspondence gives us deep insight into his musical work, which is the purpose and appeal of Red Sneaker’s “Letters” performance in January. Join Neist, his chamber players, and some guest actors on this exploration of several different composers’ letters in connection with their music written during those periods. Friday, January 15th, at 8 pm. Tickets are $15 in advance and $17 day of show.

Please join us in February for “A Coming of Spring” performance with De Organographia. This concert specializes in the music of four distinct periods: Antiquity, Medieval, Renaissance, and the 19th century – all performed on period instruments or faithful reproductions. This group will be directed Philip and Gayle Neuman and sponsored by the Early Music Guild of Oregon. Friday February 19th at 8 pm. Tickets are $15 in advance and $17 day of show.

In March, Red Sneaker will be joining the WCMS again to celebrate the year 1924. This was the most explosive decade of the century, especially for art, fashion and music. Friday, March 12th at 8 pm. Tickets are only $15 in advance and $17 day of show.

We will conclude our 2009-2010 season of the Walters Chamber Music Series in April with The Portland Cello Project. This concert is “suitable for all demographics: boogie-ing grannies, head nodding hipsters, budding middle-school musicians, and everyone in between.” Witness the phenomena on Friday, April 23rd at 8 pm. Tickets are only $15 in advance and $17 day of show.

We hope you join us for one or even all eight performances. These are not ordinary, sleep-inducing concerts – they are vibrant musical events presented by outstanding musicians – some in red sneakers!

Tylor Neist earned his Master’s in Violin Performance from the Manhattan School of Music, where he studied with Midori and Mitchell Stern. Tylor is also a dedicated teacher and performs with the Portland and Eugene Symphonies. He currently lives in Hillsboro.
