Dirdy Birdy 2009, Portland's muddiest 5K
The race kicks off 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Portland International Raceway - "for those who think a little differently about running." Dirdy Birdy has all the essentials: mud, obstacles, giant Slip & Slide, water balloon launching, cold beer, food and music. Billed as fun for the whole family (video). Adults $25, kids free.

Portland's Park & Recreation Department needsd the public's help to get its outdoor spaces in ship shape, starting with two volunteer work crews Saturday. West Linn Parks and Recreation Holiday Bazaar
'Tis the season for holiday bazaars, gift shows and bake sales throughout the area, including this one at West Linn's Adult Community Center Saturday. Doors open 9 a.m., close 4 p.m. Find handmade items, gifts, food, more for sale. Free admission. More bazaars.

2009 Model Railroad Show
There's 4,200 square foot of model railroad to explore at this walk-through exhibit at 2505 N. Vancouver Ave., Portland. It's open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. every weekend through November, with models of vintage passenger trains and steam engines, a drive-in movie theater, a Lego railroad and more. Adults $5, kids $2.
