Portland declares Monday "KATU Commit 2 Be Fit Day"

Earlier this year KATU made a commitment to you with our “Commit 2 Be Fit” initiative. We want to get people moving and improve the overall health of our community.

Our own Deb Knapp and Melanie Wingo have made personal commitments to fitness, and our station has committed to bringing your more stories about healthy lifestyles.

Now, we’re honored to announce that Portland Mayor Charlie Hales has officially declared Monday “KATU Family Matters Commit 2 Be Fit Day.”

“Portland’s passion for its people and support of outdoor recreation has earned us a reputation as a destination for families to enjoy a healthier lifestyle,” Hales said in his proclamation about Commit 2 Be Fit Day.

To celebrate, we’re hosting a day-long event on KATU News. Our goal: to get your whole family healthier and fit this spring.

Starting at 6 a.m. on KATU News This Morning, Melanie Wingo will share success stories and take you to a local gym for a big announcement about her ongoing personal commitment to be fit (trust us, it’s a big announcement that we’re very excited about).

Then later on KATU News at 4 p.m., Deb Knapp will host a call center with nutrition experts from Providence Health and Services. We’ll take calls from viewers who are getting started on their own fitness quests. We’ll also be answering questions on Facebook.

Throughout our newscasts at 4, 5 and 6 Deb will also introduce you to a Providence doctor who has figured out how to get his child to eat healthy stuff like vegetables, plus bring you more tips to lead a healthier life.

We’ll also have special message from friends like Dr. Oz, the Blazer Dancers and the dancers at Oregon Ballet Theater who have all committed to be fit!

If you haven’t already done so, go to Facebook.com/KATUCommit2toBeFit and click “like” to make your own commitment. Spread the word that Monday, May 6th is KATU & Family Matters Commit 2 Be Fit Day!

Watch: Melanie Wingo shows you how to get a workout while your kids play in the park.
