A new study, published in the American Heart Association Journal, compares the benefits of walking versus running.
Researchers found that the same energy used for moderate walking and intense
running had similar results. However, those who chose running got the benefit in a shorter amount of time.
Both running and walking reduced the risk for high blood pressure and cholesterol, diabetes and possibly coronary heart disease.
Additionally, both runners and walkers increased their health benefit with increased activity.
The study did note that running usually has a higher risk of joint injury.
Researchers analyzed more than 33,000 runners and more than 15,000 walkers across the country.
The study lasted for 6 years and most of the people were in their 40’s and 50’s.
