ELSIE, Ore. - An Oregon coast landmark burned to the ground Tuesday night.

Fire broke out at Oney's restaurant, located in the small town of Elsie near the Oregon coast along Highway 26.

Firefighters worked to knock down the blaze, but a shortage of water at the site allowed the fire to consume the restaurant, which had stood since the 1920s. Water had to be trucked in from two miles away.

Oney's was located on Highway 26 about 20 miles from Seaside. Seven local fire departments responded to fight the fire.

The restaurant was a traditional stopping point for many travelers heading to and from the coast looking for a hearty, inexpensive meal in a throwback, timber-themed setting.

Fire investigators will inspect the site Wednesday to find a cause for the fire.

There was no early word from the owners if the establishment will be rebuilt.
